Faith-Based and Community Initiatives in Corrections

    Correctional agencies may choose to offer rehabilitative programming for offenders that uses a faith-based model. Within institutions, these initiatives are offered in addition to standard opportunities for inmates to observe their own religious practices.

    For example, some prisons and jails have separate housing units with a religious focus, and faith communities can support inmates returning home. Outreach to inmates and offenders is often provided by volunteer and community organizations.
    • An NIC study in 2005 found that more than a third of state prison systems (41%) were operating or planning faith-based housing units.
    • A public hearing of the NIC Advisory Board in June 2005 explored collaborations between the faith community and corrections.
    • Federal funding is available for faith-based and other community organizations to provide services to corrections populations, including prisoner re-entry programs.
