Federal Jail Bedspace: Cost Savings and Greater Accuracy Possible in the Capacity Expansion Plan

A study of bedspace needs and agency response finds room for cost savings in housing federal detainees pending trial, sentencing, or immigration proceedings. The audit also questions findings of beds available to the U.S. Marshals Service. Double bunking and better use of Intergovernmental Agreement beds are suggested, and analysis supports continued funding of the Cooperative Agreement Program. Accession Number: 010716
