Based on a review of fifty-seven camps in twenty-six states, this report describes state and federal boot camp programs and includes data on their costs and impact on prison crowding and recidivism. Early findings indicate that the state camps reduce overall corrections costs and systemwide prison crowding. Recidivism data are limited, but so far show only marginal improvements over traditional forms of incarceration. The federal boot camp program is currently too small to have any appreciable impact on reducing overall costs, prison crowding, and recidivism. Accession Number: 011016
