Cycle of Sexual Abuse: Research Inconclusive About Whether Child Victims Become Adult Abusers

Twenty-five studies were reviewed to the question of whether persons who were sexually abused as children were at heightened risk of becoming sexual abusers of children in adulthood. Most (23) of these studies were retrospective, while two were prospective, but the results were inconclusive. Childhood sexual victimization did not necessarily lead to adult sexual offending.
