A Comparative Recidivism Analysis of Releases from Private and Public Prisons in Florida

This analysis focuses exclusively on short-term recidivism. Private prison releases had a lower recidivism rate than releases from public prison. Within 12 months, 10% of private prison releases were reincarcerated compared to 14% of public prison releases. Private prison also exhibited lower recidivism than public prisons when looking at two specific rates per 1,000 releases: the resentencing rate for private prisons was 45% lower than public prisons; the reincarceration rate was 31% lower for private prisons compared to public prisons.
