Masked Racism: Reflections on the Prison Industrial Complex

Imprisonment has been used to "disappear" problem populations like the homeless, mentally ill, drug addicts, and other marginalized groups of people. As prisons consume more and more limited social resources, other government programs that serviced the have nots are being slowly erased. The prison industry has become a potential profit center as the infrastructure to support U.S. prisons has grown to match exponential growth of its inmate population. The author likens the prison labor power to third world labor power. And the government shift to crime control over social welfare perpetuates society's underlying racist tendencies.
