Criminal Victimization of Persons with Severe Mental Illness

Over a four month period, 8.2% of those surveyed were victims of a violent crime, 2.5 times that of the rate for the general U.S. populace of 3.1. Nonviolent crime affected 22.4% of those surveyed, a rate similar to that of the general populace at 21.1%. The use of bivariate analysis showed the following factors as being significantly associated with the victimization of a mentally ill individual: urban location; use of alcohol or drugs; having a secondary diagnosis of a personality disorder; and being homeless at some time. Multivariate analysis identified substance use and transient living conditions as the two most statistically significant factors for victimization. Accession Number: 015465
