Male Young Offenders in Canada: Revised Edition

At the national level, there has been a consistent decrease in male youth charged by police from 1992 to 1997 and male youth processed through the youth court system. Male youth are not getting involved in crime at a younger age, in fact, the average rose from 15.5 to 16 years old. Violent crime by male youth peaked in 1995 then decreased back to the 1992 rate. There has been an increase in the number of male youth remanded into custody pending disposition of a charge and in the amount of secure custody dispositions. Probation is the most common disposition. The rate of male youth transferred to adult court has also increased. Accession Number: 015916
