The Supervised Pretrial Release Primer. Draft

Supervised pretrial release (SPR) is an effective way for higher risk defendants to be safely supervised in the community. SPR can also be an important part of a jail crowding reduction strategy. This guide describes the development and implementation of SPR in a question-and-answer format. Some of the 16 questions answered include: how does SPR differ from pretrial release alternatives; what are the advantages of active supervision; what types of supervised release conditions are currently used; and has the impact of SPR been evaluated. Also included is a check list for new SPR programs. Accession Number: 016327
