While overall levels in school crime have decreased during the last year, violence, theft, gangs, and drugs still negatively impact schools. This report provides detailed statistical information on the nature, extent, and scope of violence and crime in schools. Statistics are organized into the following sections: violent deaths at school; nonfatal student victimization -- student reports; violence and crime at school -- public school principal/disciplinarian reports; nonfatal teacher victimization at school -- teacher reports; and school environment. During 1998, there were 2.7 million total crimes against students aged 12-18. Of these, 253,000 were serious violent crimes which included 47 homicides.
