Federal Bureau of Prisons Clinical Practice Guidelines: Detoxification of Chemically Dependent Inmates

Recommended standards for the medical management of withdrawal from addictive substances for federal inmates are described. Procedures discussed include: general principles -- detection of substance abuse and treatment of withdrawal; management of inmates with complicating medical and psychiatric conditions; placement of inmates for detoxification; alcohol withdrawal; benzodiazepine withdrawal; barbiturate withdrawal; and opiate withdrawal. Appendixes cover: symptoms and signs of drug abuse; benzodiazepine and barbiturate dose equivalents; inmate patient information on these four types of detoxification; and Provider Self-Assessment -- Detoxification of Chemically Dependent Inmates.
