2000 Paroling Authorities Survey

Survey results from 51 paroling authorities (42 states, U.S. Parole Commission, U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, National Parole Board of Canada, Canadian Province Boards from Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, and two Australian Parole Boards) are provided. Topics covered include: parole board discretion in parole release; paroling authority and chairs; new duties and tasks; victims; parole of lifers; prison population, releases, and supervision; violation hearings, revocations, and successful discharge; appointments, terms, structure, salaries, and budgets; parole conditions; open hearings and the media; parole board training; sex offender registration, notification, and civil commitment; Court TV and other TV shows; community resources most lacking in regard to placement of parolees back into the community; inmates considered for parole and face to face hearings; and Interstate Compact cases.
