Information about methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) skin infections in inmates at the Los Angeles County jail is provided. Topics discussed include: disease background; outbreak investigation; control measures; community implications; update; risk factors for MRSA infections among men who have sex with men (MSM); and syphilis and MRSA among MSM. "Staphylococcus aureus is a ubiquitous skin organism (approximately 30-50% of people carry it) and MRSA is a strain which has developed resistance to a number of families of antibiotics" (p. 1). No deaths have been caused due to MRSA in the L.A. jail.
