Identifying Mental Health Treatment Needs Among Serious Institutionalized Delinquents Using Paper-and-Pencil Screening Instruments: Final Report to the National Institute of Justice: Executive Summary

The effectiveness of the Treatment Needs Assessment (TNA) screening instrument to identify incoming wards who are in need of mental health services is investigated. This summary covers: study design; results according to mental health intervention indicators, TNA scale scores and elevations, association of TNA scale elevations to intervention indicators, combinations of Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument (MAYSI) scales (pervasiveness of reported symptoms), false positive and false negative errors, substance abuse and mental health co-morbidity, and prior criminal behavior; and discussion.
