Exonerations in the United States 1989 Through 2003

Results from a study of wrongful conviction exonerations, in particular those of serious crimes, since 1989 are provided. This report covers: exonerations over time; the crimes for which exonerated defendants were convicted; the relation between known exonerations and all false convictions; exonerations by state; some of the causes of the false convictions; race; and exonerations by state and year of exoneration. Almost all of the exonerations (97%) involved convictions for murder (61%) or rape (37%). The top four states for false convictions are Illinois, New York, Texas, and California.
