(Offender Management)
The effectiveness of parole to reduce recidivism, at an aggregate level, of those individuals supervised after release from prison is determined. Sections of this research brief are: research highlights; beyond conditional and unconditional -- the role of the release mechanism; data sources and limitations; definitions of key terms; characteristics of released prisoners; recidivism outcomes; what does prior research say about the impact of supervision?; study methodology; for whom does supervision matter most?; when does supervision matter most?; concluding observations; and state variations. "Overall, parole supervision has little effect on rearrest rates of released prisoners" (p. 1).
