The information on which prosecutors base their bail requests is determined and analyzed according to how well it predicts failure to appear (FTA). This summary covers: research questions; the sample cases; the prosecutor's bail request and the CJA (Criminal Justice Agency) recommendation; the better predictor of FTA; does the prosecutor's request predict conviction?; does the prosecutor's request predict incarceration; does the prosecutor's request predict sentence length?; conclusions; and implications for judicial decision making. The CJA recommendation system "based explicitly on risk of FTA" is the better assessment for judges to use to determine bail. Accession Number: 021029
