The first part of this two part article, "Improving the Use of Intermediate Sanctions," is an overview of policy issues. Its author is the director of the Intermediate Sanctions Project, a joint effort of NIC and the State Justice Institute to assist criminal justice officials in building more credible and effective ranges of sanctions. The author discusses the need for all actors in a given jurisdiction to come together to determine sanctioning goals and plan for a purposeful range of sanctions. Part two is titled "Agency Sanctioning Programs." In this section practitioners in five states (Connecticut, Kansas, Iowa, Arizona and Missouri) discuss intermediate sanctioning programs currently in use in their agencies, including how these programs fit within the agency's range of sanctions.
