Classification and Restorative Justice: Is There a Relationship?

Classification, though focused upon the risk, danger, and needs of offenders, is quite compatible with restorative justice. Restorative justice embraces interventions and controls that prevent future victimization and harm. A good classification system facilitates the segmenting of various offenders. This allows an agency to turn over less serious offenders to the decision-making of communities and victims, while focusing on treatment of more serious offenders. Vermont is testing a limited risk classification scheme in conjunction with the development of a restorative justice program. Accession Number: period165
