NIC FOCUS: Community Residential Programs

The first part, of this three-part article is titled "Washington Experience With Work Release." This section details Washington's experience with work release in relation to state vs. private contractor operation, cost, community involvement, program content, quality of operation, offender placement in work release, and the role of work release in managing inmate population growth. The second part of this article is titled "A Contractor's Perspective." This section discusses a private contractors responsibilities to the state. These responsibilities are outlined to include providing for public safety, being cost efficient, eliciting support from the public by educating it to community corrections' part in the criminal justice system, and to assess program outcomes realistically. Part three is titled "Programs in Action." This section includes information on the residential programs and electronic monitoring programs of Sedgwick County, Kansas and the state of Illinois.
