Research and Evaluation
:: HOME > What We Are Doing > The Research and Evaluation Division serves NIC with both an internal and external focus. The Division supports the Institute by assisting with the development and execution of evaluation protocols for training and other assistance strategies, advising on the development of evaluation components for various programs and initiatives, coordinating special projects with research or evaluation components, and tracking and distributing information about recent research or emerging trends. A primary focus of this work is to develop products that can be translated and transmitted to the field in a format useful for correctional operations.

The Division also houses the Institute’s technology and information management functions. This includes, but is not limited to, managing and monitoring the NIC Information Center and publications contracts. In addition to managing hardware and software applications, the assigned staff participates in agency-wide initiatives and projects to ensure the best use and applications of current and emerging technologies

In terms of services to the field, the Research and Evaluation Division sponsors the Institutional Corrections Research Network (ICRN) and funds approved research or evaluation related technical assistance requests. It also coordinates several program initiatives in which practitioners from all sectors of corrections may have an interest. Such topics include but are not limited to: PREA; sexual abuse of, and between offenders; cost containment; and more broadly, the use and transfer of technology to practical correctional applications.

The Division uses both technical assistance and cooperative agreements in implementing their projects.
